Project Overview
NFU Energy has recently been involved in a pilot initiative to conduct comprehensive on-site energy efficiency audits and renewables feasibility assessments across 16 farms in the North of England.
This project was backed by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, supporting the government’s wider commitment to level up all parts of the UK by building pride in place and increasing life chances.
The project and the outcomes forms part of a detailed report that will give insight into trends, anomalies and target areas; providing the evidence required to enable the project’s steering committee to develop future programs to support farmers and growers to be more profitable and sustainable.
Key Highlights
- 16 farmers benefitted from a free Energy Audit and Renewables Feasibility Assessment from NFU Energy.
- Individually tailored reports detailing energy-saving recommendations for their businesses.
- Precise insights into renewable energy prospects.
- Detailed report for the steering committee with trends, anomalies and targeted areas.
- Provides vital evidence for future sustainability programs supporting farmers and growers.
Project Outcome
These energy studies examined on-farm process energy across a variety of agricultural and horticultural sectors. The audits identified energy-saving measures that apply across all farming sectors including switching to Light Emitting Diodes (LED) lighting, fitting Variable Speed Drives (VSDs) to save energy on pumps and fans, replacement of frequently used small personal vehicles with electric vehicle alternatives, and installation of renewable energy systems like solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind turbines to name a few.
This project is a step towards farming and the local communities becoming more sustainable in the drive towards Net Zero.
