How it works
You must register to be part of UK ETS if your site has carbon-producing equipment with a total combined rated thermal input of more than 20 MW and then fulfil a wide variety of reporting obligations every year.
Free allocation of allowances to qualifying operators of installations will continue, to reduce the risk of carbon leakage for UK businesses.
If the total carbon produced by your site exceeds your annual allowance, you need to purchase carbon credits from the market. There will be simplified provisions for small emitting installations and hospitals with emissions lower than 25,000t CO2e per annum and a net-rated thermal capacity below 35 MW. These installations will be subject to emissions targets instead of trading allowances.
There are harsh financial penalties in place for those who fulfil the eligibility requirements and do not sign up to the scheme or do not meet their annual obligations once joining. The penalties can account to hundreds of thousands of pounds – so it is imperative that if you are a large-scale carbon producer, you determine whether you need to be a part of the scheme or not.
How you benefit
- Expert assessment of your site for scheme eligibility - if your installation is on the borderline for being part of UK ETS, there may be options available that can result in you not having to be part of the scheme at all, which can save you a great deal of hassle.
- Complete peace of mind – we oversee the entire process from start to finish, from handling your application to join the scheme to offering a wealth of advice for dealing with the annual requirements of data and report submission, as well as procedure drafting and overall compliance.
- Timely trading of your carbon allowances - we manage your UK ETS accounts, ensuring you are properly set up on the required UK websites, as well as arranging for purchase, surrender and allocation of carbon allowances on your behalf.
