Renewable energy has an increasing fundamental role

An article in the FarmingUK newsletter about the proportion of energy supply that comes from renewable generation is pretty revealing. For the first time, renewable energy has provided more electricity generation than coal and nuclear. In fact over 25% of UK electricity came from renewable sources between April and June this year. Of the proportion provided from renewable energy, 42% came from wind power.

Here is the breakdown of DECC statistics for percentage of UK electricity supplied by each electricity source between April and June 2015.

  • Renewables - 25.3 %
  • Coal - 20.5%
  • Nuclear - 21.5%
  • Gas - 30%
  • Other - 2.7%

As these are summer statistics where electricity consumption is generally lower, it will be interesting to see how the balance changes in the next two quarters.
