A quick water contract check could uncover savings, billing errors and better service.
Electricity and gas contracts are routinely reviewed. Water is often overlooked. That can mean missed savings, billing errors and contracts that no longer fit the business.
Can your business choose its water retailer?
Most non-household customers in England and Scotland can choose their water retailer. In Wales, competition is generally limited to businesses using more than 50 megalitres a year, so check eligibility before comparing options.
Switching retailer does not change the water source or pipes. The regional wholesaler still runs the network; the retailer handles billing, account support and meter-reading arrangements. Multi-site businesses may also be able to consolidate accounts.
Why review now?
Engagement remains low. Research published by CCW and Ofwat in October 2025 found that only 19% of businesses had switched or renegotiated. Yet 68% of switchers said it was worthwhile and 63% found it easy.
Wholesale charges are not generally negotiable, but retailers can compete on margin, contract terms, billing and service. The cheapest headline rate is not always the best overall deal.
Where could costs be hiding?
Estimated readings, incorrect meter or site details, unsuitable tariff bands, drainage charges and unnoticed increases in consumption can all push up the bill. A sudden rise in usage may also signal a leak or billing problem.
Are you on a deemed water contract?
A deemed contract applies when water services continue without an active negotiated agreement - often after a move, change of occupier or contract expiry. Published deemed or out-of-contract rates can be less competitive, so check notice periods and renewal terms early.
Proof in practice
A multi-site poultry business had six water contracts. NFU Energy reviewed and tendered the portfolio, consolidating the supplies into two three-year agreements.
Annual water cost reduced from £128,000 to £114,000 - an estimated saving of £14,000 a year, or approximately 11%.
Savings vary according to consumption, location, existing terms and the options available at the time of review.
Five quick checks
- Which retailer supplies your water and wastewater services?
- Are you on negotiated terms or deemed rates?
- Are bills based on recent meter readings?
- Are the meter, site and drainage details correct?
- When does the contract end, and what notice is required?
